Experienced PACU Registered Nurses can bring their post-anesthesia care expertise to a 13-week travel nursing contract in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This dynamic PACU opportunity offers the chance to care for patients ranging from pediatrics through geriatrics while supporting a broad range of surgical specialties, including orthopedic, neurological, cardiothoracic, vascular, general, thoracic, urological, and gynecological procedures. Located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Upper Marlboro combines convenient access to major cultural and metropolitan amenities with the welcoming character of a Maryland community.
PACU Travel Nursing Job Details
- Nursing Specialty: Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
- Location: Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in the Washington, DC metropolitan area
- Contract: 13-week travel nursing contract
- Start Date: October 26, 2026
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,850–$1,950
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week; 36 hours per week
- Shift: 12-hour day shifts, approximately 7:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:4
- PACU Unit: 16-room post-anesthesia care unit with an average daily census of approximately 15–20 patients
- Patient Population: Adolescents, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics
- Weekend Requirement: Approximately every other weekend, or two weekends per schedule cycle
- Holiday Coverage: Required as scheduled
- Floating: May be required within the specialty, including rotating to pre-operative services and other nearby locations as needed
PACU Registered Nurse Job Requirements
- At least 2 years of recent PACU nursing experience
- At least 2 years of ICU experience required for first-time travelers; first-time travelers may be considered with strong 3–5 years of PACU experience
- Active Maryland RN license or eligible Compact RN license
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHSS certifications; American Heart Association certification required for BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- Experience caring for pediatric through geriatric patients in Phase I and Phase II recovery
- Strong assessment, airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and post-operative recovery skills
- Ability to manage a 1:4 patient assignment and float within scope when needed
- Epic charting experience preferred
- Previous charge, community hospital, trauma, or travel nursing experience preferred
- CPI certification may be required as part of the compliance process
PACU Registered Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical procedures
- Monitor and manage patients across Phase I and Phase II post-anesthesia recovery
- Perform thorough pre-operative assessments, post-anesthesia assessments, and ongoing patient reassessments
- Recognize and respond to changes in airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and pain status
- Manage airways, ventilated patients, arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, drains, IV medications, and emergency interventions as indicated
- Administer and monitor procedural sedation, reversal agents, analgesics, nerve blocks, and other post-operative therapies
- Care for patients following orthopedic, neurological, cardiothoracic, vascular, general, thoracic, urological, gynecological, and other procedures
- Document assessments, interventions, medication administration, and patient outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record
- Provide discharge education and instructions to patients and families while coordinating safe transitions from recovery
- Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rapid response teams, and other members of the care team
- Float to pre-operative services or other appropriate areas within scope when required
