ICU Travel Nursing Job Details

  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,020–$2,130
  • Location: Newport News, Virginia
  • Start Date: November 9, 2026
  • Contract Duration: 13 weeks, ending February 8, 2027
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
  • Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
  • Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and holiday rotation required
  • Unit: Generalized 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Patient Population: Adult and geriatric patients
  • Assignment Type: On-site travel nursing contract
  • Local Candidate Policy: Candidates residing within 50 miles of the assignment are not eligible

ICU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years of recent ICU or critical care nursing experience required
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or a qualifying compact state
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Dysrhythmia competency required at orientation
  • Experience caring for critically ill adult and geriatric patients with complex, multisystem conditions
  • Proficiency with ventilators, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, chest tubes, hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care infusions
  • Experience with electronic health records and medication-dispensing systems preferred
  • Previous travel nursing experience preferred
  • Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and clinically decisive in high-acuity situations

ICU RN Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments of critically ill adult and geriatric patients.
  • Develop, implement, prioritize, and evaluate individualized plans of care using the nursing process.
  • Manage patients requiring ventilator support, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, and other advanced respiratory modalities.
  • Administer and monitor critical care infusions, including heparin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and other vasoactive medications as ordered.
  • Perform hemodynamic monitoring and provide care for patients with Swan-Ganz catheters.
  • Provide care for patients with chest tubes, STEMI/NSTEMI conditions, stroke presentations, and multisystem organ dysfunction.
  • Assist with invasive procedures and advanced therapies, including intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella devices, and temporary pacing when applicable.
  • Administer medications safely and monitor patients for treatment effectiveness and adverse responses.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, respiratory therapists, support services, patients, and families.
  • Educate patients and caregivers while advocating for safety, dignity, privacy, and informed care decisions.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition, escalating concerns through appropriate clinical channels.
  • Document care accurately and maintain compliance with infection prevention, safety, and professional practice standards.
