PCU Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Progressive Care Unit Contract in Winston-Salem, NC

Join a high-acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) team in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as a travel Registered Nurse and provide exceptional care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients requiring close monitoring and complex interventions. This 16-week travel nursing opportunity is ideal for a confident PCU, stepdown, intermediate care (IMC), or DOU nurse with strong telemetry and cardiac medication experience. Winston-Salem offers a welcoming community with vibrant city amenities, outdoor recreation, cultural attractions, and convenient access to the beautiful Piedmont region.

Travel Nursing Job Details

  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,660–$1,750
  • Location: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  • Start Date: November 2, 2026
  • Contract Duration: 16 weeks, with assignments of 13 weeks or longer considered
  • Schedule: 36 hours per week; 3 shifts per week
  • Shift Duration: 12-hour day shifts, 6:45 a.m.–7:15 p.m.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Scheduling: Department-scheduled; no block scheduling
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:3–4
  • Floating: Required as needed to a sister intermediate cardiac care unit
  • Call: No on-call requirement
  • Orientation: 24 hours, including a hospital orientation week
  • Charting: Epic
  • Unit Environment: 20-bed ICU stepdown unit with an average daily census of approximately 19

PCU Travel RN Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or a compact state
  • At least 2 years of recent PCU, progressive care, stepdown, IMC, DOU, or comparable acute-care nursing experience
  • Strong experience with telemetry, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, arterial lines, and vasoactive or cardiac medication drips
  • Current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • Experience with conscious sedation, IV starts, IV insulin protocols, heparin protocols, and blood product administration
  • Proficiency with central lines, PICC lines, peripheral lines, chest tubes, tracheostomies, BiPAP/CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, and noninvasive airway management
  • Ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient condition, including rapid response and code situations
  • Must be willing to complete required pre-start testing and unit-specific competency assessments, including EKG testing
  • Must be flexible to work required weekends and float as needed

PCU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for patients with respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, GI bleeds, withdrawal, post-operative conditions, neurological and orthopedic diagnoses, and complicated obstetric cases
  • Monitor patients using bedside telemetry with remote backup and promptly identify, interpret, and manage dysrhythmias
  • Administer and titrate permitted cardiac and vasoactive infusions, including Cardizem, nitroglycerin, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, dopamine, dobutamine, and phenylephrine, according to unit protocols
  • Care for patients with arterial lines, chest tubes, tracheostomies, BiPAP/CPAP, and high-flow oxygen therapy
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, medication administration, documentation, patient education, and care coordination
  • Participate in rapid response interventions and collaborate with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, IV services, rehabilitation, radiology, and other interdisciplinary partners
  • Maintain safe infection-prevention practices and follow isolation precautions
  • Float to the designated sister unit when needed while maintaining high standards of patient safety and clinical care
