  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
  • Schedule: Three shifts per week for a 36-hour schedule; 48-hour options may be available. Every-other-weekend coverage is required.
  • Holiday Coverage: Required; holiday time-off requests must remain flexible to support staffing needs.
  • Patient Population: Adults and geriatric patients, including general surgery, medical overflow, and post-surgical patients
  • Typical Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:6, with the potential to flex higher in rare circumstances
  • Call: None
  • Electronic Health Record: Epic

Medical-Surgical RN Job Requirements

  • Minimum 1.5 years of recent medical-surgical or progressive care nursing experience
  • Active Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale certification
  • Strong post-surgical nursing competencies
  • Experience with electronic health record documentation; Epic experience required
  • Ability to provide safe, compassionate care for adult and geriatric patients in a fast-paced inpatient hospital environment
  • Comfort floating to other medical-surgical areas, the ICU, or the emergency department waiting area to care for medical-surgical patients as needed
  • Current influenza vaccination required; medical exemptions may be considered

Travel RN Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive bedside nursing care to adult and geriatric medical-surgical patients
  • Care for patients recovering from appendectomy, cholecystectomy, bowel surgery, gynecological procedures, and other general surgical interventions
  • Provide telemetry monitoring and promptly identify changes in patient condition
  • Administer medications, heparin, insulin, patient-controlled analgesia, and blood products safely
  • Manage peripheral IVs, PICC lines, implanted ports, feeding tubes, surgical drains, chest tubes, tracheostomies, and wound vacuums
  • Perform wound care, colostomy and ileostomy care, isolation precautions, oral suctioning, and non-invasive airway management
  • Provide oxygen therapy, including nasal cannula, high-flow nasal cannula, oxygen masks, and portable oxygen equipment
  • Support patients before and after hemodialysis and coordinate care with interdisciplinary teams
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in Epic
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapy, IV services, pharmacy, rehabilitation, radiology, rapid response, phlebotomy, and other clinical support teams
  • Float as needed while maintaining safe, compassionate, and evidence-based patient care
