Travel Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse (PCU RN) – 13-Week Contract in Winston-Salem, NC

Travel RN Job Details

  • Location: Winston-Salem, NC 27103
  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,660–$1,750
  • Contract: 13 weeks, with assignments accepted through February 27, 2027, based on unit needs
  • Start Date: October 26, 2026
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 36 hours per week
  • Shift Duration: 12-hour day shifts, 6:45 a.m.–7:15 p.m.
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4–5; may reach 1:6 during exceptional circumstances
  • Unit: 48-bed mixed progressive care unit (PCU), telemetry, and medical-surgical setting
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend; staffing goals include approximately four weekend shifts in six weeks, with additional coverage possible based on unit needs
  • Floating: Required to comparable units within or near the facility
  • Charting and Systems: Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR
  • Block Scheduling: May be accommodated when unit needs are met

Progressive Care Unit RN Requirements

  • At least 2 years of recent registered nursing experience in PCU, stepdown, intermediate care, telemetry, or a comparable acute-care setting
  • Active North Carolina or compact RN license; a pending license may be considered for submission
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • NIHSS certification preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with telemetry monitoring, EKG interpretation, dysrhythmia management, and passing a specialty EKG assessment before start
  • Proficiency with IV starts, central-line care, chest tubes, noninvasive airway management, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilators, tracheostomy care, and isolation precautions
  • Experience managing or titrating cardiac and vasoactive infusions, including heparin, dopamine, and Cardizem, as permitted by unit policy
  • Must be prepared to complete required testing within 48 hours of signing and complete pre-start education modules
  • Strong teamwork, communication, clinical judgment, and adherence to attendance and scheduling expectations

PCU RN Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate nursing care to adults and older adults with COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress or failure, pulmonary embolisms, influenza, COVID-19, and related comorbidities
  • Monitor patients requiring telemetry, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, chronic ventilator or tracheostomy support, and other advanced respiratory interventions
  • Interpret and respond to dysrhythmias while escalating changes in patient condition appropriately
  • Administer medications and manage prescribed cardiac, vasoactive, anticoagulant, and insulin therapies according to protocol
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, develop and update individualized care plans, administer treatments, and evaluate patient outcomes
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapy, vascular access, rapid response, code, pharmacy, rehabilitation, social services, and other members of the interdisciplinary team
  • Provide patient and family education, promote safety, and maintain accurate documentation in Epic
  • Float to comparable units when needed while maintaining high standards of care and professional conduct
