Unit Notes
MedSurg &Tele (This is a mixed unit) - Fast paced unit with many admissions and discharges due to surgical volume.
- # beds 39 Beds (37 private rooms & 1 semi private room)
- Certs BLS, ACLS, NIHSS are required
- Ratios 1 to 4 tele patients; 1 to 5 MedSurg patients but could be assigned a mix of MS & tele...could be 3 MS & 1 tele or 2 MS & 2 Tele, etc...)
- EMR Cerner experience preferred. Make sure to ask if they already have Cerner experience & if so, was this recent? They can comp test out of Cerner training.
- Charge Nurse: House supervisor in house 24/7, Nurse Manager during normal business hours, Nurse Shift Managers Charge Nurse OR Break Nurse each shift. If no Nurse Shift Manager, will have a Charge Nurse Break Nurse
- Nurse Aides CNAs based on the census
- Weekend Requirement "4 shifts out of 4-week schedule.
- Weekend shifts for nights are Fri/Sat & Sat Sun for days"
- Holidays Travelers are expected to work into the perm staff holiday rotation schedule (1 major holiday & 1 minor holiday)
- Scrub Color Navy blue. If you wear a scrub jacket it also must be navy. If you wear an undershirt underneath your scrub top it must be navy, white, or black.
- Tele Phillips *Must be able to read & interpret all cardiac rhythms
- Vents Cpap or Bipap (per RT)
- Hospitalist or Intensivist in house Yes - on call after hours
- IV Team No
- RT 24/7 Yes
- Pharmacy 24/7 Yes & Omnicell
- Shifts 12's 7 - 7:30. Do not be late. Very strict regarding attendance. AM huddle. Block scheduling is not guaranteed.
- Floating Travelers are the 1st to float. Could possibly float between MSW & MHB because they are under the same license, traveler may float between the two. Float to any MedSurg/Tele. ICU for MedSurg patients if no beds. ER for MedSurg Tele holds.
- Floor specific orientation Normally 1-2 shifts; however, could be up to 3 depending on Cerner experience. If have Cerner could be less orientation on the unit.
- Common diagnosis / Types of patients Acute/Chronic Medical Conditions, Post Surgical patients including Bariatrics and Total Joints (must be comfortable with this population). Stroke patients, non-titratable drips.
- Set Rate Drips: Set rate Cardizem*** Amiodarone & Heparin
- Additional Notes Warm welcoming staff. Can be a challenge because it is a mixed unit (MedSurg & Tele). Very fast paced, busy, high turnover. Any issues that compromise patient safely will not be tolerated.
