ICU Nurse Manager

Location: Billings, Montana
Employment Type: Nursing (Clinical)
Shift: Day (8 hours per day, 40 hours per week)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

The ICU Nurse Manager is responsible for managing and supervising nursing departments, ensuring excellent patient care, achieving financial objectives, and fostering leadership development. This role involves tactical, operational, and strategic responsibilities, including staffing, budget management, employee evaluations, and goal development aligned with organizational plans.


Scope Levels

  • Level 1 Nurse Manager: Manages fewer than 50 staff or a department operating Monday through Friday.
  • Level 2 Nurse Manager - Complex: Manages more than 50 staff or multiple departments, including 24/7 operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the clinical nursing environment and contribute to strategic planning and daily operations.
  • Facilitate collaborative problem-solving and shared decision-making.
  • Advocate for resources and implement organizational vision and values.
  • Manage budgets, employee engagement, recruitment, retention, and competency verification.
  • Ensure nursing care is efficient, effective, safe, and compassionate.
  • Promote professionalism and employee engagement.
  • Hire, orient, retain staff, and ensure sufficient staffing to meet patient care needs.
  • Provide mentorship and professional education, ensuring annual competency verification.
  • Conduct staff performance and peer reviews.
  • Coordinate compliance with patient safety initiatives and regulatory bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS).
  • Utilize nursing resources effectively, including nurse practitioners and specialty roles.
  • Promote integration of Healing Commitments and Healing Connections in patient care.
  • Monitor and improve patient satisfaction using service metrics and benchmarks.
  • Partner with physicians to achieve clinical, operational, and service goals.
  • Support Nurse Director in managing student nurse activities.
  • Encourage staff participation in community health organizations and outreach.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Strong skills in communication, problem-solving, financial management, clinical knowledge, resource management, patient safety, mentorship, and community outreach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in oversight roles.
