Description
Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Fast-paced, high-acuity labor and delivery unit with over 300 births per month.
- Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence.
- Average patient load includes 20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admissions, 40 visits per day, and 20 rooms.
- Patient population includes obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for intrapartum, high-risk antepartum, and postpartum care, as well as high-risk patients under 16 weeks.
- Procedures performed include scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage.
- Unit uses PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR systems.
- Orientation duration: 24 hours.
- Scrubs provided (blue).
Shift Details
- Night shift: 18:45 to 07:15 (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
- Float requirement: Float as needed on a special maternity care high-risk OB unit.
- No call requirement.
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Patient Care and Unit Expectations
- High patient acuity and volume; not recommended for 48-hour contracts due to workload intensity.
- Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
- Fit testing required (N95 mask or Novant PAPR training completion).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if negative/equivocal. Declinations not accepted.
- Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility-specific declination form if negative/equivocal.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required; exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physician-signed TB questionnaire required.
Orientation and Training
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates).
- Medication Safety training module completion with certificate required.
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules required.
- Epic system training available with optional test-out for experienced users.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of start; must pass with 82% or higher.
Additional Notes
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions.
- Employment application must be uploaded prior to start.
- Badge photo required immediately after signing contract; must meet specific photo criteria (passport style, white background, business attire).
- Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents must be signed prior to start.
This position is suited for experienced labor and delivery RNs comfortable in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with strong clinical skills in obstetrical care and newborn management.
