Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Fast-paced, high-acuity labor and delivery unit with over 300 births per month.
  • Double labor assignments are common daily.
  • Average ratios: 2:1 nurse to patient.
  • Approximately 20 births, 30-40 admits, 40 visits, and 20 rooms per 24 hours.
  • High-risk obstetrical care including intrapartum, antepartum, postpartum, and patients 16 weeks gestation and greater.
  • Unit includes obstetrical triage and performs scheduled/unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage.
  • Strong preference for RNs with circulating experience in the OR.

Work Schedule

  • Shift: Day shift, 12 hours (06:45 AM – 07:15 PM)
  • 36 hours per week offered (3 shifts/week)
  • Weekend requirement: Minimum every other weekend (6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule)
  • Float required as needed within the unit

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of labor and delivery nursing experience; 3 years preferred.
  • Must have experience working in a high-volume unit with >300 births per month.
  • First-time travelers accepted if experienced in large/high-volume settings.
  • Skills: Circulating in OR, sterile vaginal exams, and competent in immediate newborn care.

Certifications Required

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
  • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Scrubs provided (blue)
  • May be required to precept or orient new staff members

Patient Population & Care Details

  • Obstetrical patients 16+ weeks gestation for all intrapartum and high-risk antepartum/postpartum care.
  • High-risk maternity care including patients under 16 weeks gestation.
  • Procedures include antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration, Cesarean births, and cervical cerclage.

Systems Used

  • PYXIS medication system
  • EPIC electronic health record
  • SBAR communication framework

Time Off (RTO) Policy

  • No RTO allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation or denial of rehire.
  • Maximum 7 days RTO allowed for auto-offer consideration.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
  • Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive.
  • Immunizations: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella per facility standards.
  • Physical exam and references required per travel agency standards.
  • Mandatory completion of facility-specific education modules and compliance training.
  • Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract.
  • Must complete password setup and login to facility’s learning system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of receiving credentials.

Additional Notes

  • Unit is considered difficult and fast-paced; not recommended for nurses with less than 2 years of experience.
  • 48-hour contracts discouraged due to workload intensity.
  • Candidates may be required to float within the high-risk maternity care unit.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of labor and delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Experience working in a high-volume labor and delivery unit with over 300 births per month
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

This position is ideal for experienced labor and delivery RNs comfortable in a high-volume, high-acuity environment seeking a travel contract in North Carolina.
