Description
Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Night shift: 18:45 - 07:15 (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 48 hours/week)
- Patient ratio: 1:6
- Float requirement: May be required to float to a nearby main campus (~32 minutes away)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- No call requirement
- Must be able to work holidays
- Return to open (RTO) maximum: 7 days
- Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters
- Unit orientation: 24 hours
- Scrubs: Navy blue or white
Patient Population / Diagnoses
Includes but not limited to:
- Diabetes, dementia, COVID-19, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy
- GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, congestive heart failure (CHF), urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Various surgical recovery cases, renal failure, hypertension, cellulitis, failure to thrive
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Feeding tube care and management
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
- Central line blood draws and phlebotomy
- PICC line management
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) management
- BiPAP/CPAP management and maintenance
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- ACLS certification
- Telemetry on-unit monitoring
- Post angiogram, post cardiac surgery, post myocardial infarction care
- IV insulin protocols
- Bariatric surgery care
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Accessing/managing ports
- Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) care
- Substance withdrawal management
- Surgical drains care
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Pre/Post thoracic surgery care
- Tracheostomy care/management
- Previous charge nurse experience
- Electronic documentation proficiency
- Community hospital experience
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Licensing
- Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina
Testing & Competency Requirements
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam prior to start (score 82% or higher, with up to 3 attempts)
- Color blindness testing within 1 year (minimum 80% score)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam (for new contracts)
- Other competency exams as required by the facility
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Measles (Rubeola) immunity by titer or vaccination
- Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella immunizations per standard requirements
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- Drug screening within 6 months of start (9-panel acceptable)
- Physical exam (per travel agency standards, not required by client)
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Self-scheduling
- No block schedules except weekend blocks
- Must be able to work holidays
- May be required to float to other units or campuses
- No call required
Orientation & Training
- 24-hour unit orientation
- Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and confidentiality agreements
- Must complete annual compliance and mandatory education as applicable
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates)
Additional Requirements
- Photo for badge (passport style, solid white background, business attire) must be submitted immediately after signing contract
- Must complete corporate ID setup and I-Learn login within 24 hours of receiving credentials
- Background check required within 6 months of start
- Various accounting and employment documents required prior to start (e.g., W4, tax forms, ID verification)
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, acute care environment with diverse patient diagnoses
- Must be prepared to respond to disaster or mass casualty events as part of Storm/Hurricane Team
