ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with a strong Neuro ICU background to provide care in a comprehensive stroke center. The unit primarily manages stroke patients and other complex neurological cases requiring critical care expertise.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with at least some ICU experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Ventilator management
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Blood product administration
- Continuous IV sedation
- CVA/Acute stroke management
- External ventricular drains (EVD)
- ICP monitoring
- Post-neurosurgery management
- Lumbar drain experience
Work Details
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours per week: 36 hours
- Patient Ratios: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census
- Average Daily Census: 11-12 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Float Requirement: Yes
- Call Requirement: None
- Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
- Scheduling: Per unit needs
- Dress Code: Navy blue and white scrubs
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Comprehensive Stroke Center with patients including:
- Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (including subarachnoid hemorrhage)
- Subdural hematomas
- Craniotomies
- Carotid stents and endarterectomies
- Aneurysm coiling/clipping
- Seizures
- Depth electrodes
- Myasthenia gravis
- Use of specialized equipment:
- External ventricular drains (EVD)
- Lumbar drains (LD)
- Camino ICP monitoring
- LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun
- Unit systems include Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR communication
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates
- Drug screening within 6 months (9-panel acceptable)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (with exceptions for past positives)
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement during flu season
- Physical exam and references per travel agency standards
- Completion of medication safety training and other facility-specific education modules
- Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required promptly after contract signing
- Must complete Epic training or test-out option if eligible
Important Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
- Strong neuro ICU experience is mandatory; candidates without 2 years in Neuro ICU should not be submitted
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam must be passed with a minimum score of 82% within 72 hours of start
- Candidate must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios and weekend shifts
- Facility requires adherence to all hospital policies, confidentiality agreements, and annual compliance training
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable managing complex neurological critical care patients on night shifts in a high-acuity stroke center environment.
