Job Description: CVOR Surgical Technologist
Position Summary:
A CVOR Surgical Technologist (Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Tech) is a vital member of the surgical team, specializing in assisting during cardiovascular procedures such as open-heart surgery, vascular surgery, and other complex operations involving the heart and blood vessels. They work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses to ensure a sterile and well-organized environment throughout surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and maintain the cardiovascular operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are sterile and ready.
Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments and supplies in a timely and efficient manner.
Maintain a sterile field and adhere to strict infection control protocols.
Set up and operate specialized equipment such as heart-lung machines, suction devices, and electrosurgical units (in some settings).
Monitor and count instruments, sponges, and needles before, during, and after surgery to ensure nothing is retained.
Assist with patient positioning, draping, and prepping for surgery.
Handle specimens properly and prepare them for laboratory analysis.
Participate in post-operative room cleanup and restocking of supplies.
Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in surgical technology and cardiovascular procedures.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program (Certificate, Diploma, or Associate’s Degree).
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (preferred or required in many states), such as:
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the NBSTSA
Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) through NCCT
Previous experience in cardiovascular or operating room settings strongly preferred.
Excellent knowledge of surgical instruments, cardiovascular procedures, and sterile techniques.
Strong attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills.
