Description

Job Opportunity: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry RN

Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Facility: Willis-Knighton Pierremont (Willis-Knighton Health System)
Unit: 6West – New Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit


Unit & Patient Information

  • Beds: 18
  • Patient Types:
    • Sepsis, Cellulitis, DVT/PE, CHF, COPD, COVID, Pneumonia
    • Occasional post-op overflow including Total Joints (Knees, Hips, Shoulders) and GI/Abdominal surgeries (Hemicolectomies, Bowel Resection)
  • Patient Ratios:
    • RN: 1:5-6 (nights 1:6)
    • CNA: 2 per shift (unless census is low)

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of permanent staff RN experience in acute care required
  • First-time travelers accepted if they meet the 2-year acute care experience
  • Travelers previously permanent staff must have a 1-year separation before traveling
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Must pass an EKG competency exam prior to arrival (includes MedSurg RN competency)

Skills & Clinical Competencies

  • Wound management, JP drains, wound vacs
  • Hemodialysis catheter care, fistulas
  • PCA and pain management

Support & Resources on Unit

  • Charge nurse (typically free floating)
  • HUC/Secretary (day shift only)
  • In-house phlebotomy; RN draws CVL/PICC/Midline
  • IV/VAT Team available 7am-3pm (PICC placement)
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) in house
  • Hospitalists available for most patients
  • Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), Speech Therapy (ST)

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR: Meditech Expanse
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation & Floating

  • Hospital orientation: 2-4 days
  • Unit orientation: 2 days (may vary based on experience)
  • Floating: Med/Surg units within the hospital; travelers float first

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend
  • Work schedule: 4 days one week, 3 days the next (mandatory)
  • Time off: Up to 7 days allowed; must extend contract 1 week per week off requested
  • Only 1 weekend off per 13-week contract allowed
  • No on-call required
  • Holiday work: expected to work 2 out of 3 holidays

Additional Information

  • Scrub color: Pewter
  • T-shirts: Gray, white, or black with WK monogram
  • Jackets: Gray or black
  • Badges: Must be worn above the waist and visible at all times
  • Parking: Free in designated areas

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks
