Labor and Delivery Nurse Opportunity

Location: Rapid City, South Dakota
Specialty: Labor and Delivery
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• 10 Labor & Delivery beds
• 4 OB Emergency Department (Triage) beds
• 4 Antepartum rooms
• Only Level 3 NICU within a 350-mile radius, accepting high-risk and complicated pregnancies
• Patient types include antepartum, OB triage/ED, postpartum, and infants

Patient Ratios

• Antepartum: 1:3
• Inactive Labor: 1:2
• Active Labor: 1:1
• Postpartum/Couplet care: 1:3 couplets

Experience & Requirements

• Minimum 2 years L&D experience preferred, ideally on a Level 3 or higher L&D unit
• First-time travelers accepted
• Must have competency managing high acuity labor patients (e.g., preeclampsia, preterm labor, <35 weeks gestation)
• Must be able to care for couplets
• Level 2 nursery baby experience highly preferred
• Required certifications: BLS, NRP
• Preferred certifications: ACLS, inpatient obstetrics certification, electronic fetal monitoring, inpatient antepartum
• Manager approval required if lacking EPIC charting experience or Level 3+ L&D experience
• Must be a Registered Nurse licensed by the South Dakota Board of Nursing

Skills & Clinical Competencies

• IV starts, cervical checks, phlebotomy
• Administration of magnesium sulfate, blood, insulin
• Circulating in C-sections and C-section recovery care
• Experience with EPIC electronic charting system preferred

Orientation & Support

• 4-day orientation with preceptor: 3 days in L&D, 1 day in Postpartum
• Support staff includes Unit Secretary, Scrub Tech, Charge Nurse, VAT team, Respiratory Therapist (24/7), OB Physician team, Anesthesia/CRNA

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour shifts (0630-1830), variable shifts including nights and days throughout contract
• Some requisitions may be straight nights; flexibility required
• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• No on-call required
• Holiday work as needed, with manager approval for time off

• BLS and NRP certifications

This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery nurses comfortable with high acuity patients and variable shift work in a Level 3 NICU setting.
