Surgical Services Opportunity – Rapid City, South Dakota

Facility Overview

  • 12 Operating Rooms (ORs), with 9 running Monday-Friday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, tapering throughout the day
  • 20 Pre-Op bays
  • 14 Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays

Patient Types

  • Surgical specialties including Urology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Robotic Surgery, General Surgery, Podiatry, ENT
  • Pre-Op and Post-Op Recovery (Phase I and II), including some ICU-level care in PACU

Patient Ratios

  • OR: 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Pre-Op: 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • PACU Phase I: 1:1 or 1:2 depending on acuity
  • PACU Phase II: 1:2 to 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of OR experience with Level 1 or 2 trauma
  • Surgical experience in a tertiary care center preferred
  • Experience with orthopedic trauma (ORIF, external fixation, amputations), neurosurgery (craniotomy, spinal), robotics (Da Vinci XI), and general surgery
  • Pre-Op and PACU experience, including ICU skillset in PACU

Certifications & Education

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by South Dakota Board of Nursing
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Skills

  • Proficient in surgical nursing across multiple specialties
  • Ability to manage pre-op, intra-op, and post-op care including ICU-level care in PACU

Support on Unit

  • Surgery team includes RN/First Assist, Surgical Tech, Nurse Clinician, Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN), Service Line Leads, Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), Scheduler, Preference Card Analyst, OR Techs, and Anesthesia staff
  • Pre-Op/PACU support includes RNs, Nurse Aides, Nurse Clinicians, and CRNs

Charting System / Equipment

  • EPIC electronic health record system (experience preferred)
  • Omnicell medication dispensing system
  • Alaris infusion pumps

Floating

  • RN may float as needed to Pre-Op, PACU, or floor as helping hands if outside peri-op services

Orientation

  • 1 week orientation for all specialties

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation: If weekend-only position, on call every 3rd weekend
  • Call expectations: Ideally one overnight call per week (7 PM – 7 AM) and every 3rd weekend (Friday 3 PM – Monday 7 AM)
  • Sleep room available in Pre-Op/PACU area; couches in break room
  • 15-minute response time required
  • Holiday coverage: 2 out of 4 major holidays expected
  • Time off requires manager approval; may volunteer for low census days without pay

  • Travelers must live more than 100 miles from the facility
  • First-time travelers generally not accepted without prior approval
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as travelers
