Labor and Delivery Nurse Opportunity

Location: Spearfish, South Dakota

Facility & Unit Information

• 8 beds in the unit
• Patient types include Labor & Delivery, postpartum, antepartum, newborns, and infants under 28 days old
• Level 2A Nursery caring for sick babies
• Preferred experience with Gyn-Surgical/Mastectomy post-op patients (not mandatory)

Experience Requirements

• Must have Labor & Delivery experience
• First-time travelers accepted if they have L&D experience
• Travelers with only 1 year of general nursing experience are not accepted unless it is specific to L&D
• Travelers must live more than 100 miles from the facility
• Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler

Patient Ratios

• Laboring patients: 1 nurse to 2 patients
• Couplets (mother and baby): 1 nurse to 3-4 patients

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Required Education

• Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing
• Registered Nurse (RN) license from South Dakota Board of Nursing

Skills Required

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) interpretation and intervention
• Adult and neonatal assessment skills

Unit Support

• No dedicated CNA for L&D, but CNA available facility-wide 24/7
• One charge nurse covers all hospital units
• Lab and phlebotomy services available 24/7
• No IV/VAT team
• Centralized fetal monitoring system
• Resource nurse support from primary nurse, manager, or charge nurse
• Respiratory therapist available facility-wide
• In-house hospitalist for Med/Surg
• Nursery located behind nurse’s station

Charting System

• Epic

Floating Requirements

• May float to Med/Surg as helping hands or in a CNA role
• Floating only within scope of practice and below

Orientation

• Typically 1 week for experienced traveler nurses

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• On-call: per census and rotation schedule
• Holiday expectations: 3 holidays scheduled, 1 on-call, rotating schedule
• Time off: 2 “gold tickets” per year; requests must be submitted before next schedule is posted

Contract Length

• 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
