Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Acute Care (Stroke Unit / MedSurg)

Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Unit: 7 East - Stroke Unit / MedSurg
Facility Type: 24-bed unit

Schedule & Contract Length

• Schedule: 5/2 rotation, working every Monday and Tuesday (night shift on a 5 on/5 off/2 on/2 off cycle or opposite Wed/Thurs schedule)
• Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend mandatory
• Contract Length: 13 weeks

Experience & Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of permanent staff RN experience in acute care required
• First-time travelers accepted only if they meet the experience requirement
• Travelers must have a 1-year separation if previously permanent staff at this facility

Patient Population

• AFIB/RVR, DKA, HTN, COPD, Acute Renal Failure, post-Heart Catheterization
• Stroke Unit overflow: CVA/TIA patients requiring TPA administration
• Spinal surgical patients (ACDF, Laminectomy)

Patient Ratios

• RN: 1:3
• CNA: 1:7

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIH Stroke Scale

Skills & Competencies

• Titratable drips: Cardene, Cardizem, Insulin, Heparin, Neo, Levophed (manager approval required if no experience)
• Chest tube management, tracheostomies, Peritoneal Dialysis, ISTAT, CSF (lumbar) drains preferred
• Must pass an EKG competency exam prior to arrival (includes MedSurg RNs)

Unit Support

• Charge nurse (may have patient assignment)
• In-house phlebotomy and respiratory therapy
• IV/VAT team available 7am-3pm
• Resource nurse available depending on staffing
• Hospitalist available in-house
• OT, PT, Speech Therapy available
• Centralized Tele Monitoring on unit

Technology & Equipment

• EMR: Meditech Expanse
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Floating

• May float to Stroke or MedSurg units (MedSurg ratios 1:5-6)

Orientation

• Hospital orientation plus 2 shifts (12 hours each) orienting to the unit

Time Off & Holidays

• Up to 7 days of time off allowed; must extend contract 1 week for every full week off
• Only 1 weekend off per 13-week contract allowed
• No call responsibilities
• Expected to work 2 out of 3 holidays

Dress Code & Other Notes

• Scrub color: Pewter
• T-shirts: Gray, white, or black with facility monogram
• Jackets: Gray or black
• Badges must be worn above the waist and visible at all times
• Free parking in designated areas

Additional Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

• Flu documentation, ACLS, BLS, CPR certification
• Criminal background check, drug screen, physical exam
• Immunizations: Hep B, MMR, TDAP, Varicella, TB testing
• Employment authorization, license verification, resume, references
• Skills checklist, unit competency, dysrhythmia exam, medication exam
• HIPAA training and other onboarding documentation
