ICU RN Travel Assignment - Santa Cruz, California

Position Overview

  • Seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse for a travel assignment.
  • Must have 2+ years of ICU experience.
  • Required certifications/licenses: Active CA RN license, BLS, ACLS, NIHSS.
  • Preferred certifications: CCRN and PALS.

Unit Details

  • Unit: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Beds: 16, can expand to 20
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1 and 1:2
  • Charge Nurse present (does not carry patients)
  • No nurse aides on the unit
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
  • Telemetry equipment: Phillips
  • Ventilators: Draeger (managed by Respiratory Therapist)
  • 24/7 in-house intensivist (on call at night)
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy support
  • IV Team available during the day

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Shifts: Mostly 12-hour shifts, some 8-hour shifts; may be on call with a 30-minute response time depending on census/staffing
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend plus filling gaps in weekend schedule
  • Holidays: Work scheduled into holiday rotations (Holiday RTO considered but not guaranteed)
  • Floating: Expected to float to telemetry unit (ratio 4:1)
  • Orientation: 2 shifts on ICU floor, then independent on 3rd shift
  • Scrub color: Navy

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Adults and Pediatrics
  • MedSurg, Neurology, Balloon pumps (permanent staff operate; training and check-off provided if experienced)
  • Craniectomies, occasional intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
  • Some trauma patients (non-transferred)
  • Psychiatric cases including overdoses
  • Pediatric minor cases and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Thrombolytic therapy (TPA)
  • Hypothermia treatment
  • ECMO, Impella, CRRT (PrismaFlex) – training and check-off provided if experienced
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR)
  • Potential to assist with carotid stenting and extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECOS)
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) – not required but training available

Additional Notes

  • Must live within 30 minutes of the hospital for call shifts
  • Call shifts are assigned based on census and are always originally scheduled shifts that become call
  • Evening shift (7p-7a) every other week with first priority to float
  • Holiday work is part of the schedule and may require flexibility
