Telemetry Nurse (4W) - Bakersfield, California

Job Overview

Position: Telemetry Nurse for a travel contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Location: Bakersfield, CA
Unit: 4W Telemetry
Beds: 31 (11 private, 10 semi-private)
Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
Shift Scheduling: Block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met (not guaranteed)
Weekend Requirement: 4 shifts per 4-week schedule
- Night weekends: Friday/Saturday
- Day weekends: Saturday/Sunday
Holiday Requirement: Participate in permanent staff holiday rotation (1 major, 1 minor holiday)

Qualifications

Minimum 2 full years of Telemetry nursing experience
Active California RN License
Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Must be able to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms on Phillips telemetry monitors

Patient Population & Care

Common diagnoses: post pacemaker, hemodialysis, new onset atrial fibrillation or rapid ventricular response, stroke, traumatic brain injury, sepsis, patients with bedsores, PEG tubes, oncology patients with cardiac issues, urology patients (cystoscopy), some correctional patients (federal), and stepdown from ICU
No cardiac surgical patients
Some patients from nursing homes (~1/3)
Occasional orthopedic patients (rare)
Ventilator support: CPAP or BiPAP (per respiratory therapist)
No IV team on unit
Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
Hospitalist or Intensivist on call after hours
Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system

Staffing & Support

Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
Charge Nurse: Shift Manager and Resource Nurse
Nurse Aides: 2 on day shifts, 1 on night shifts
Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float between MedSurg units, ICU tele, or ER holds within the same license group
Orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor, floor-specific

Additional Information

Scrub color: Navy blue scrubs required; scrub jackets must be navy; undershirts must be navy, white, or black
Call requirements: Must report within 30 minutes if placed on standby or call
Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
Strong charge/precepting RN preferred
