Telemetry Nurse (4W) - Bakersfield, California

Job Overview

Position: Telemetry Nurse for a travel contract
Location: Bakersfield, CA
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit: 4W Telemetry
Bed Count: 31 beds (11 private, 10 semi-private)
Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
Shift Scheduling: Block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met (not guaranteed)
Weekend Requirement: 4 shifts per 4-week schedule
- Night weekend shifts: Friday/Saturday
- Day weekend shifts: Saturday/Sunday
Holiday Requirement: Participate in permanent staff holiday rotation (1 major and 1 minor holiday)

Qualifications

Minimum 2 full years of telemetry nursing experience
Active licenses and certifications required:
- California RN License
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Patient Population & Care

Common diagnoses:
- Post pacemaker patients
- Hemodialysis patients
- New onset atrial fibrillation (Afib) or rapid ventricular response (RVR)
- Stepdown patients from ICU
- Surgical patients (non-cardiac)
- Urology patients (e.g., cystoscopy)
- Oncology patients with cardiac monitoring needs
- Some correctional patients (federal)
- Stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), sepsis, patients with bedsores, PEG tubes
- Approximately one-third of patients come from nursing homes
No cardiac surgical patients

Unit Environment & Support

Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
Nurse aides: 2 on day shift, 1 on night shift
Charge Nurse: Shift Manager and Resource Nurse available
EMR system: Cerner
Telemetry equipment: Phillips monitors; must be able to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms
Respiratory Therapy: CPAP or BiPAP as ordered by RT; RT available 24/7
Hospitalist or Intensivist: On-call after hours
IV Team: Not available
Pharmacy: 24/7 with Omnicell access
Call Requirements: Must report within 30 minutes if placed on standby or call

Orientation & Floating

Orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor on the floor
Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float between Medical-Surgical units (MSW & MHB), ICU telemetry holds, or ER holds

Dress Code

Scrub color: Navy blue
Scrub jackets must be navy
Undershirts under scrubs must be navy, white, or black

This position is ideal for experienced telemetry nurses comfortable with a diverse patient population and flexible with floating and weekend/holiday shifts.
