Travel Nurse Opportunity: Medical-Surgical (Telemetry)

Location

• Facility: Med-Surg with Telemetry Unit
• Beds: 51 beds on unit, 122 total facility beds
• Trauma Level: 3
• Adult patient population

Employment Type

• Travel assignment
• Contract length: 16 weeks

Unit & Patient Care

• Unit Type: Acute Medical-Surgical with Telemetry
• Patient Diagnoses: telemetry patients requiring tele certification, post-op ortho, post-op urology and GI, COPD, CHF, diabetes, end-of-life care, dementia, placement needs
• Age Range: Adults
• Nurse-Patient Ratio: 3-5 (days), 4-6 (nights)
• Ancillary Staff: CNA/PCT (LNAs) assigned at 1:8-10 ratio, unit secretary 6am-10pm most days, charge nurse 24/7 without patient assignment
• Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
• Ventilator management by Respiratory Therapists (RT)

Required Experience & Certifications

• Minimum 2 years clinical experience, with at least 1 year in Med-Surg Telemetry
• Telemetry certification required (ability to apply, interpret, and respond to telemetry rhythms)
• BLS and ACLS certifications required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required prior to starting
• EPIC documentation system experience within past 2 years required
• Prior travel experience required:

  • Minimum 2 travel assignments in 300+ bed facilities OR
  • Previous experience at any University of Vermont Health Network acute care facility
• Preferred: peripheral IV placement skills

Orientation & Training

• 1-2 precepted shifts plus time with educators before patient contact
• Bi-weekly orientations (Monday sessions)

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour shifts with option to pick up extra 8-hour shifts
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Day)
• Floating: required but infrequent, to like units
• Scheduling via online system; schedules published in advance
• No call or charge nurse responsibilities
• No block scheduling

Unit Culture & Environment

• Team-oriented, collaborative environment with RNs, LPNs, and LNAs working closely
• Professional dress code: scrubs (own or provided), closed-toe non-skid shoes, minimal jewelry, groomed hair/beard, no artificial nails
• Documentation system: Epic
• Medication system: Pyxis
• Special equipment: Sigma IV pumps, CAAD PCA pumps, Kangaroo tube feed pumps, GE EKG machines, Stryker beds, Mindray cardiac monitors, Hill-Rom nurse call system
• Unit-specific procedures: NG tube insertion, peripheral IV insertion, telemetry strip interpretation performed by bedside RN

• Reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended due to limited public transportation and housing options up to 15 minutes away
• Free onsite parking available
• Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
