Job Opportunity: MS Tele Oncology (Tower 6) - Phoenix, Arizona

Facility & Unit Overview

Unit: Oncology Acute Telemetry, Tower 6
Unit Size: 32 beds
Hospital Size: 607 beds
Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma Center
Teaching Hospital: Yes, nursing students present
Specialty: Oncology with lung, liver, kidney transplant programs; associated with Barrow Neuro Institute
Common Diagnoses: 85% Oncology patients, 15% Telemetry MedSurg (surgical, medical, oncology)
EMR System: Cerner
Telemetry Equipment: Phillips, RN interprets EKG
Ventilators: Bipap, Cpap
Hospitalist/Intensivist: Not in-house
Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
Pharmacy: Available 24/7
IV Team: SWAT RN available for difficult IV sticks

Job Details

Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (facility will not consider contracts shorter than 13 weeks)
Shift: 7am - 7pm (12-hour shifts)
Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:4
Charge Nurse Role: Yes, with light patient assignment; acts as Oncology resource RN
Nurse Aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights
Weekend Requirement: At least 1 weekend per month
Holiday Requirement: Work into rotation
Floating: May float to other MedSurg/Telemetry units
Scrub Color: Navy

Required Experience & Certifications

Minimum 2 years CORE experience in specialty submitted
Level 1 Trauma and Teaching experience required
Previous travel experience required for ED, Neuro ICU
Cerner EMR experience required for ED
Certifications: BLS and ACLS required; Chemo certification a plus
Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts) for certain units including Telemetry
Must pass Day 1 Pass/Fail Exam during orientation
SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes (pass/fail) except for Neuro ICU and ED with some exceptions
Must be competent in sterile field maintenance and nursing skills related to Foley catheter and central line care

Orientation & Onboarding

Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
Floor-specific orientation: 2 days on the unit
Onboarding paperwork must be complete by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date (no exceptions)

Additional Requirements & Notes

Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Travel teams must have their own vehicles
Parking: Assigned parking lot with shuttle to facility; night shift parking in garage
50-mile radius rule applies (driver’s license is source of truth)
All RNs expected to complete SIMs Lab and other educational sessions on lifts, restraints, and wound care
Facility expects high competency in sterile technique and nursing skills

This position is ideal for experienced oncology telemetry nurses with strong critical care skills, teaching experience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, tertiary care teaching hospital environment.
