Pediatrics RN Opportunity - Rapid City, South Dakota
Unit and Patient Information
- Unit Size: 15-bed Pediatric Unit; 5-bed PICU
- Patient Types:
- General Pediatrics: Patients 0-18 years and stable adult overflow (post-surgery, infections, trauma, mental health, etc.)
- PICU: Critically ill patients 0-18 years requiring intensive care (respiratory failure, circulatory failure, infectious diseases, trauma, toxic exposures, hematologic/oncologic diseases)
- Patient Ratios:
- General Pediatrics: 1 RN to 5 patients
- PICU: 1 RN to 1-2 patients
Experience and Education Requirements
- Minimum 1.5 years PICU RN experience required
- First-time travelers accepted only if they have more than 2 years of experience
- Completion of an approved nursing education program
- Registered Nurse licensed by South Dakota Board of Nursing
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) not required
Skills and Competencies
- Physical assessment of patients from newborn to adult
- Evaluate symptoms and vital signs
- Administer medications as prescribed
- Patient and family education on plan of care
- Proficient in EPIC electronic charting system
- PICU skills: ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients
Unit Support and Resources
- CNA support at a 1:5 ratio
- Charge nurse covers both Pediatric and PICU units (floater)
- RNs and Nurse Aids draw their own labs
- RNs start their own IVs; ultrasound available for difficult IVs
- Resource Nurse available (Nurse Clinician/Educator)
- Case Management and Social Work support
- Respiratory Therapy available
- Hospitalist with Pediatric APP support
- Pediatric Pharmacy, Social Work, and Case Management services
Charting and Equipment
- EPIC electronic health record system
- Omnicell medication dispensing system
Floating Assignments
- NICU (30-bed, feeder/growers) with 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio
- General Pediatrics with ratios up to 1:5
Orientation
- 1 day facility orientation (online and in-person)
- 2 days unit orientation with preceptor
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- May be placed on low census/on-call status
- Holiday work expected
- Time off requires pre-approval
