Coronary Care ICU (T4) - Phoenix, Arizona
Facility Overview
- Location: Phoenix, AZ
- Unit: CTICU/CVICU
- Unit Size: 24 beds
- Hospital Size: 607 beds
- Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma Center
- Teaching Hospital with nursing students
- Associated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
- Specialty: Cardiac surgery recovery, lung, liver, kidney transplants, thoracic surgery, ECMO, and more
Contract Details
- Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum (no contracts shorter than 13 weeks accepted)
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Must be off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- No concurrent contracts allowed while working for this facility
Required Experience & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years of CORE experience in specialty submitted
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Previous travel experience required for ED, Neuro ICU
- Cerner EMR experience required
- ACLS and BLS certifications required; CCRN preferred
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes)
- Strong IV skills required (no dedicated IV team)
- Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Work Environment & Expectations
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 (high number of 1:1 assignments)
- Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment)
- Nurse aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights with high census
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Holidays worked as part of rotation
- Shift hours: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm)
- Float to other ICUs and telemetry units; patient ratio 4:1 on telemetry
- Float to Westgate campus if requested
- Parking: Assigned lot with shuttle to facility; night shift parking in garage
- Travel teams must have their own vehicles
Patient Population & Procedures
- High acuity patients including:
- Cardiac surgery recovery
- IABP (Intra-aortic balloon pump)
- CRRT (Continuous renal replacement therapy)
- ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation)
- Lung transplant, thoracic surgeries (esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy)
- TAVR (Transcatheter aortic valve replacement)
- Empallas (likely Impella devices)
- High number of bedside procedures: bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, epidurals
- Intensivist coverage during day, on-call at night
- Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7 (pharmacy supports transplant patients)
- Telemetry monitoring with Phillips system
Orientation & Onboarding
- Onboarding paperwork due by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date (no exceptions)
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 days on unit
- Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (except Neuro ICU and ED have modified requirements)
- Additional training on lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only)
Important Notes:
- Candidates must pass the Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam prior to acceptance; failure results in 6-month disqualification within CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento Region
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- No concurrent contracts allowed
- Travel teams must have their own vehicles
- High acuity environment requiring strong critical care skills
