Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse (RN) Travel Assignment

Location & Facility Overview

  • Unit: Emergency Care Center (ECC) / Emergency Room (ER)
  • Unit Beds: 29 bed ED, 4 bed Behavioral Health (BDU), 7 bed Fast Track (FT); all beds can swing to ER beds
  • Facility Beds: 341
  • Trauma Level: Level 3
  • Teaching Facility: No
  • Teaching Hospital Experience Required: No

Contract Length

  • Duration: 32 weeks

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience overall
  • Minimum 1 year clinical experience in specialty (ER)
  • Certifications required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — must be active or proof of class prior to start
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) — required prior to starting
  • Prior travel experience preferred
  • Charge nurse experience preferred
  • NY nursing license required or proof of application with applied date (NY license processing takes 6-8 weeks)

Patient Population & Care Environment

  • Patient age range: Neonate to geriatric
  • Patient types: Adult and pediatric ED patients, psychiatric patients, COVID patients, boarded patients (medical/surgical, long-term care, psychiatric)
  • Critical care patients are quickly transferred to ICU
  • Nurse patient ratio: Typically 1:5, sometimes higher based on volume; must be comfortable working with ratios higher than 1:4 in a busy community setting

Unit Staffing & Support

  • CNA/PCT support: Yes (multiple per shift)
  • Unit clerk/secretary: Yes (1 per shift)
  • Crisis clinicians: Yes (7a-11p)
  • Advanced Practice Providers: Yes, typically 3 staggered shifts from 8a-11p
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7
  • Anesthesia support available 24/7

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 20 hours for short contracts, 24 hours for 13-week contracts
  • Scheduling: Rotating shifts, no blocked scheduling
  • Shift hours: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, 11a-11p, 3p-3a
  • Weekend requirements: Yes (minimum every other weekend or adjusted schedule)
  • Holiday requirements: Yes (must work 2 out of 3 major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day/Eve)
  • Call requirements: No
  • Self-scheduling: No

Job Duties & Unit Protocols

  • Nurse manages drips (prepared by pharmacy 24/7)
  • Nurses perform their own IV starts and EKGs; CA II staff assist with labs and EKGs
  • Nurses administer their own respiratory treatments
  • Nurse may care for boarded patients including psychiatric and COVID patients
  • Zero tolerance for cell phone or earbud use while working

Documentation & Equipment

  • Documentation system: EPIC (experience within past 2 years required)
  • Medication system: Pyxis
  • Special equipment: Phillips MP40 monitors, Alaris IV pumps
  • Ventilator management: Respiratory therapy team

  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white
  • Shoes: Closed toe required
  • Jewelry: Not specified
  • Hair/Beard: Clean shaven
  • Nail polish: No artificial nails

Additional Notes

  • Reliable personal transportation strongly recommended; public transportation is not accessible
  • Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
  • Employment gaps over 90 days must be explained
  • Complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type required for submission

This position is a rotating shift ER RN role in a busy community hospital with a diverse patient population and requires strong clinical skills, flexibility, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with variable nurse-to-patient ratios.
