ICU Nurse Opportunity - Rapid City Hospital, South Dakota

Facility: Rapid City Hospital
Hospital System: Monument Health
Unit: Mixed ICU (MICU, SICU, CICU, TICU) - 39 beds divided into pods
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Care for complex ICU patients including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma cases.
  • Patient diagnoses include ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multiple system trauma.
  • Cardiac experience preferred but not required; fresh open heart cases reserved for experienced permanent staff.
  • Patient ratios vary from 1:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience (excluding travel assignments) preferred.
  • Candidates with 1.5 years ICU experience plus significant RN experience outside ICU may be considered with approval.
  • Must have completed at least one prior travel assignment; first-time travelers not accepted.
  • Travelers must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility.
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as travelers.

Certifications & Education

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license approved by South Dakota Board of Nursing.
  • Required certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – mandatory before arrival.

Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system (required).
  • Comfortable working a 48-hour workweek (non-negotiable).
  • Experience with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, paralytics.
  • Skilled in hemodynamic line management, proning, ventilator management, telemetry.
  • Strong critical thinking, assessment skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT strongly preferred.
  • Ability to float to Emergency Department (ICU RN) or to ICU (PCU RN) is a plus.
  • Candidates should be prepared to share examples of exceeding leadership expectations.

Unit Support

  • CNA support: 1-2 nurse aides per unit plus mobility float aide.
  • Charge nurses: 2 CRNs oversee all ICUs.
  • Phlebotomy: peripheral blood draws only.
  • IV/VAT Team: ICU CRNs place all midlines.
  • Resource nurse available depending on staffing.
  • Respiratory therapists available 24/7.
  • Physician coverage: 3 intensivists on days, 2 on nights, plus APP on nights.

Charting & Equipment

  • Epic (required for ED & ICU).
  • Alaris pumps (switching to Baxter pumps by October).
  • Omnicell medication system.

Floating

  • Floating is uncommon unless unit is overstaffed.
  • Possible float to adult MedSurg/Telemetry floors with 1:4 ratio.
  • Traveler comfort with floating must be confirmed during interview.

Orientation

  • Hospital orientation plus:
    • One 12-hour shift and one 8-hour shift in the ICU.

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation every other weekend (not guaranteed).
  • No on-call requirements.
  • No holiday time off (RTO) allowed.
  • Time off approval up to 7 days, must extend contract to full 13 weeks.
  • No time off during Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August).

  • Scrub color: Navy.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with high-acuity patients and a fast-paced environment, who meet the certification and experience requirements and are willing to commit to a 13-week contract with a 48-hour workweek.
