Surgical Services Opportunity – Rapid City, South Dakota

General Information

• Facility has 12 Operating Rooms (ORs); 9 ORs run Monday-Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, tapering down throughout the day.
• 20 Pre-Op bays and 14 Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays.
• Patient types include surgical cases in Urology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Robotic Surgery, General Surgery, Podiatry, and ENT.
• Care includes Pre-Op, PACU Phase I and II, with some ICU-level care required.

Experience & Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of OR experience with Level 1 or 2 trauma.
• First-time travelers generally not accepted without prior approval.
• Travelers must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
• Permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as travelers.

Patient Ratios

• OR: 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio.
• Pre-Op: 1:2 ratio.
• PACU Phase I: 1:1 or 1:2 depending on patient acuity.
• PACU Phase II: 1:2 to 1:3 ratio.

Certifications & Education

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by South Dakota Board of Nursing.
• Required certifications: BLS and ACLS.

Skills & Clinical Experience

• Surgical experience in a tertiary care center.
• Proficient in Ortho-Trauma procedures (ORIF, external fixation, amputations), Neurosurgery (craniotomy, spinal), General Surgery, and Robotic Surgery (Da Vinci XI).
• Experience in Pre-Op and PACU, including ICU-level skills in PACU.

Unit Support Team

• Surgery: RN, First Assist, Surgical Tech, Nurse Clinician, Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN), Service Line Leads, Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), Scheduler, Preference Card Analyst, OR Techs, Anesthesia.
• Pre-Op/PACU: RN, Nurse Aides, Nurse Clinician, CRNs.

Technology & Equipment

• Charting system: EPIC (experience preferred; notify if unfamiliar).
• Additional equipment: Omnicell medication system, Alaris infusion pumps.

Floating

• RN may float as needed to Pre-Op, PACU, or floor.
• If floated outside peri-op services, role is as helping hands.

Orientation

• One week orientation for all specialties.

Scheduling & Call

• Weekend rotation: If weekend-only position, on call every 3rd weekend.
• Call expectations: Ideally one overnight call per week (7 PM – 7 AM) and every 3rd weekend from Friday 3 PM to Monday 7 AM.
• Sleep room available in Pre-Op/PACU area.
• 15-minute response time required.
• Holiday coverage: 2 out of 4 major holidays.
• Time off requires manager approval; may volunteer for low census days without pay.

Contract Length
