Description

ICU Nurse Opportunity - Rapid City, South Dakota

Unit & Patient Information

  • Unit Type: Mixed ICU (MICU, SICU, CICU, TICU) divided into pods
  • Beds: 39 total
  • Patient Types: Complex ICU patients including surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro, and trauma cases
  • Common Diagnoses: ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, multiple system trauma (heavy trauma population)
  • Cardiac Experience: Preferred but not required; experience with CABG/TAVR (24-48 hrs post-op) preferred for travelers
  • Fresh open heart cases: Only for experienced staff, typically permanent staff

Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum ICU Experience:
    • Preferred: 2 years ICU experience (excluding travel assignments)
    • Consideration for 1.5 years ICU experience plus significant RN experience outside ICU (requires management approval)
  • Travel Experience: Minimum one prior travel assignment required; first-time travelers not accepted
  • Geographic Requirement: Travelers must live at least 100 miles from any facility in the system
  • Permanent Staff: Must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler

Patient Ratios

  • RN to patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or rarely 1:3

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – mandatory; travelers unwilling to obtain TNCC prior to arrival will be declined

Education

  • Completion of an approved nursing education program
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in South Dakota

Skills & Experience

  • Epic electronic health record experience required
  • Experience with ICU patient types listed above
  • Experience with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, paralytics
  • Skilled in hemodynamic monitoring, proning, ventilator management, telemetry
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented critical care environment
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT strongly preferred
  • ICU RNs may float to Emergency Department (ED)
  • PCU RNs may float to ICU
  • If experience outside ICU specialty, include details in offer

Unit Support

  • CNA support: 1-2 nurse aides per unit plus mobility float aide
  • Charge nurses: 2 CRNs oversee all ICUs
  • Phlebotomy: Peripheral blood draws only
  • IV/VAT Team: ICU CRNs place all midlines
  • Resource Nurse: Available depending on staffing
  • Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
  • Physicians: 3 Intensivists on days, 2 on nights, plus APP on nights

Charting & Equipment

  • Epic (required for ED & ICU)
  • Alaris pumps (switching to Baxter pumps by October)
  • Omnicell medication system

Floating

  • Floating is uncommon unless unit is overstaffed
  • Possible float to adult MedSurg/Telemetry floors with 1:4 ratio
  • Traveler comfort with floating confirmed during interview

Orientation

  • Hospital orientation plus (1) 12-hour shift and (1) 8-hour shift in ICU

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation every other weekend (not guaranteed)
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • No RTO (request time off) during holidays or during Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
  • Time off approval up to 7 days, must extend contract to full 13 weeks if time off taken
