Job Summary: Operating Room (OR) Nurse

Unit: Operating Room (Surgical Services)
Unit Beds: 8 OR Main Campus + 4 ORs at ASC

Contract Length

4 weeks

Experience Requirements

Minimum clinical experience: 2 years
Minimum clinical experience in specialty (OR): 2 years
Prior travel experience: Not required

Certifications Required

State nursing license (NY)
AHA BLS certification
Preferred certifications noted but not required

Work Environment & Staffing

Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1
Circulating nurse role required; scrub experience preferred
No CNA/PCT or unit clerk support on shift
Other staff on unit: OR Aides, Scrub Techs, Surgical Assistants, RNs (~30 staff per shift)
No advanced practice providers on unit
Orientation: 2 days

Scheduling & Shifts

Shift hours: 07:00 - 19:30 (12-hour shifts)
Rotation schedule: Rotating days off with other 12-hour shift staff
Floating required to Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Weekend requirements: On call once every 3rd to 4th weekend
Call requirements: 1 night per week
Holiday requirements: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day/Eve)
No block schedules; Monday through Sunday coverage

Patient Population

Surgical patients excluding cardiac, transplant, neuro, and gastric bypass surgeries
Age range: 6 months to 100+ years

Equipment & Support

Respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
Respiratory manages ventilators
Unit-specific procedures include starting IVs and patient transports if central transport is backed up

Documentation & Systems

Electronic Medical Record: EPIC (experience within past 2 years required)
Medication system: EPIC

Dress Code & Appearance

Scrubs provided
Closed-toe, non-skid shoes required
No jewelry while scrubbed in; earrings must be covered by hair covering
Hair/beard must be covered with disposable caps
Nail polish must not be chipped; no fake nails allowed

Additional Notes

Reliable personal transportation strongly recommended; public transportation not accessible
Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
Employment gaps over 90 days must be explained
Complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type required for submission
