Labor & Delivery Nurse - Travel Contract

Location: Bakersfield, California

Job Details

Specialty: Labor & Delivery
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit: Labor & Delivery
Shift Hours: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM / 7 PM - 7 AM)
Weekend Schedule: Usually every other weekend (same as permanent staff)
Patient Load: Per ACOG Guidelines (2:1 ratio) - must be comfortable managing 2 patients simultaneously
Patient Types:
- High-risk patients
- Multiple births (up to triplets)
- C-section circulation and recovery (must have C-section experience)
- No elective abortions; emergent tubal or hysterectomy surgeries only
- Post-delivery baby care (skin-to-skin recovery)
Unit Environment:
- Fast-paced, busy unit delivering over 300 babies per month
- Level 3 (almost level 4) NICU support for high-risk deliveries
- Closed unit with no floating; nights and every other weekend required
- No nurse aides; OB techs assist with C-sections and baby care
- Charge nurse available 24/7 (does not take patients)
- Documentation requires full charting (not by exception)
- Orientation includes 2 shifts on unit plus educator meetings and file reviews

Required Certifications & Licenses

Active California RN License
BLS (through AHA)
ACLS (through AHA)
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Advanced AWHONN Certification
Advanced Fetal Monitoring

Experience Requirements

Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience
Must have strong L&D skills, including C-section experience

Additional Information

Electronic Medical Record system: Cerner preferred (required)
Equipment: Pagers linked to call light system, internal spectralink phones
Breaks: 1 half-hour clocked break and three 15-minute breaks per shift (per California law)
Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
No IV team; nurses manage IVs themselves
Telemetry only post-surgery for 1 hour after C-section
