Telemetry Nurse Travel Contract - Bakersfield, California

Position Overview

  • Seeking an experienced Telemetry nurse for a travel contract.
  • Must have 2 full years of Telemetry nursing experience.
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and an active California nursing license.
  • Ability to read and interpret all cardiac rhythms is essential.

Contract Details

  • Contract length: 13 weeks.
  • Shift length: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7:30 PM).
  • Block scheduling allowed if unit needs are met (not guaranteed).
  • Weekend requirement: 4 shifts per 4-week schedule.
    • Weekend night shifts: Friday/Saturday.
    • Weekend day shifts: Saturday/Sunday.
  • Holiday work: Travelers expected to participate in permanent staff holiday rotation (1 major and 1 minor holiday).

Unit Information

  • Unit: 4W Telemetry.
  • Bed count: 31 beds (11 private, 10 semi-private).
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4.
  • EMR system: Cerner.
  • Charge Nurse: Shift Manager and Resource Nurse present.
  • Nurse aides: 2 on days, 1 on nights.
  • Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float between MedSurg and other telemetry units, ICU holds, or ER holds.
  • Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Post pacemaker patients.
  • Hemodialysis patients.
  • New onset atrial fibrillation (afib) or rapid ventricular response (RVR).
  • Stepdown from ICU.
  • Surgical patients (excluding cardiac/surgical).
  • Urology patients (e.g., cystoscopy).
  • Oncology patients monitored for cardiac issues.
  • Some correctional patients (federal).
  • Stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), high acuity, heavy patients.
  • Patients with bedsores, PEG tubes, sepsis.
  • Approximately one-third of patients come from nursing homes.

Equipment & Support

  • Telemetry monitors: Phillips.
  • Ventilators: CPAP or BiPAP (per respiratory therapist).
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7.
  • Hospitalist or intensivist on call after hours.
  • Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell.
  • No IV team on unit.

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy blue scrubs required; scrub jackets must also be navy; undershirts must be navy, white, or black.
  • Call requirements: Must report within 30 minutes if placed on standby/call.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
