ICU Float Nurse Travel Opportunity - Arizona (Glendale)

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years ICU nursing experience (highest required)
  • Active Arizona nursing license
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Basic Dysrhythmia Exam required prior to contract
  • Must be proficient with vasoactive drips
  • Strong general Medical & Surgical ICU experience required
  • Prior travel experience not explicitly required

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Float between ICU, MedSurg Telemetry, and Emergency Department holds
  • Approximately 50% of time working in non-ICU (MedSurg Telemetry) environment
  • Comfortable working with a variety of patient acuities and diagnoses
  • Expected to work independently at times, with support from resource nurse and tech
  • Must maintain a positive attitude and strong teamwork skills; no pass culture

Patient Types & Common Diagnoses

  • Vasoactive drips, ventilator weaning
  • CHF (unstable), sepsis
  • Neurological: seizures (non-complex), CVA (transfers if status/uncontrolled)
  • Cardiac: NSTEMI (case by case), atrial fibrillation, hemodynamic monitoring, STEMI (transfers)
  • Pulmonary: pneumonia, pleural effusions, simple pneumothorax, PE (case by case)
  • Endocrine: DKA, acute tubular necrosis, pyelonephritis
  • Renal: acute kidney infection, hemodialysis (temporary venous catheters)
  • Overdose cases (case by case)
  • Transfers to main campus for higher acuity cases (e.g., ARDS, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest)

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Central line insertion (including Cordis)
  • Intubations
  • Thoracentesis, paracentesis, pericardiocentesis
  • Femoral arterial line insertions
  • CT-guided pigtail and large bore catheter insertions
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Temporary hemodialysis catheter insertion

Unit Details

  • Unit: ICU / Multi-Operational Service Unit (MOSU)
  • Beds: 5
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU patients: 1:2
    • MedSurg patients: 1:3
    • Telemetry float: 1:4 if no ICU patients
  • EMR system: Cerner
  • Charge nurse and resource nurse available
  • 1 tech per shift shared with MedSurg unit
  • 12-hour shifts (7a-7p, 7p-7a)
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Holiday coverage: 3 out of 6 main holidays
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • Telemetry monitoring with Phillips system; RNs must interpret EKGs
  • Ventilator management required
  • Hospitalist coverage during the day
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7
  • Pharmacy open 6am-5pm; night meds mixed onsite or at main campus
  • Floating to MedSurg or MICU at main campus possible

Orientation & Training

  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • Pass/fail SIMs Lab on Day 1 for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (sterile technique critical)
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care provided

Additional Requirements

  • Must have own vehicle (travel team requirement)
  • Natural hair color required
  • Must be willing and able to work MedSurg Telemetry patients as well as ICU
  • Ability to work independently and handle high acuity patients safely
