Labor and Delivery Nurse - Travel Contract
Location: Bakersfield, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery (L&D) nurse for a travel contract in California. The nurse will care for L&D, recovery, postpartum, and women's health patients, including high-risk OB cases. Transfers occur for major maternal or fetal complications.
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 2 years in Labor and Delivery
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Active California nursing license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AWHONN)
- Skills: Must be able to start IVs independently
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Unit Details
- 18 LDRP rooms, 6 triage spaces, 8 overflow beds shared with med-surg women's care center
- 2 OR rooms with self-circulating nurses
- Nurse-to-patient ratios follow California state guidelines:
- 4:1 for couplets
- 3:1 for stable antepartum
- 2:1 for L&D
- 1:1 for deliveries (with a second NRP nurse present)
- EMR systems: Cerner, fetal links, HUGS infant security
- 24/7 in-house OB and anesthesia coverage
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy available 24/7
- Call: Standby as needed with 30-minute response time if called in
Work Schedule & Orientation
- Shifts: 7 AM and 7 PM (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks (usually two consecutive days plus two spread out)
- Holidays: Must work one major and one minor holiday
- Orientation: Minimum 3 shifts on unit; includes online GNOSIS OB training and perinatology safety specialist training
- Floating: Nurses float between L&D, postpartum, C-section, and women's health units
Additional Information
- High-risk OB care with NICU charge nurse and RT attending all high-risk deliveries
- Level 2 NICU on site
- Strong focus on perinatal safety initiatives and evidence-based practice (e.g., Pitocin checklists, maternal mental health screenings, pre-eclampsia initiatives)
- No elective deliveries before 39 weeks
- 100% chart audits; preference for Cerner charting experience
- Baby-friendly hospital practices: immediate skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support
- L&D scrubs provided; nurses must also bring navy blue scrubs to wear daily
- OB techs assist as nurse aides/scrub techs
