Description

Job Opportunity: Float Pool Nurse (ICU/MedSurg Tele/PCU)

Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit/Department

  • Float Pool covering ICU, MedSurg Telemetry, and PCU units across two campuses
  • Includes inpatient holding in Emergency Department
  • Unit details:
    • East Campus: ICU and stepdown patients, 10-bed double occupancy
    • West Campus: Stepdown (14 rooms, double occupancy), MedSurg Tele (95 beds divided into 4 areas), MedSurg pods (10-room pods, double occupancy)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • PCU: 1:4
    • MedSurg Tele: 1:5-6

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year ICU experience required (highest stated requirement)
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Must pass dysrhythmia exam with at least 80% within two attempts before contract signing
  • Comfortable titrating drips including: Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Insulin
  • RNs are required to titrate drips
  • Able to interpret cardiac monitor strips (Stepdown unit)
  • Care for common patient types including geriatric, orthopedic, post-procedural cardiac cath, post-MI, and CABG post-op day 3-4
  • Manage patients with groin sites in stepdown unit
  • Use of nurse aides in all settings
  • Respiratory equipment used includes CPAP, BiPAP, and Heated High Flow (especially in PCU and MedSurg)

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift times: 7 AM - 7 PM (AM and PM shifts)
  • Schedule published 6 weeks in advance for 4 weeks at a time
  • Travelers must be flexible with unit assignments and shifts
  • Night shift may allow block scheduling
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday shifts included in permanent staff rotation
  • Call/standby required on shifts with excessive staff; standby nurses may be called in during their 12-hour shift
  • Unit assignments communicated by text message 2 hours prior to shift start
  • Distance between campuses: approximately 20-25 minutes

Orientation

  • 8-hour general hospital orientation day
  • 12-hour shift orientation at West MedSurg Tele and PCU units
  • East campus orientation similar but smaller and easier to navigate

Additional Notes

  • Radius rule: Candidates may not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year
  • Dress code: Currently solid color professional scrubs; transitioning to navy scrubs aligning with Dignity guidelines starting October

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with multiple critical care settings and flexible scheduling.
