ICU/PCU Float Nurse - Texas (Lufkin)

Job Overview

  • Specialty: ICU/PCU Float
  • Location: Lufkin, Texas
  • Contract Length: 9 weeks

Unit Details

  • Units: ICU and PCU (Stepdown)
  • Beds: 24 beds in ICU, 26 beds in PCU
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • ICU: 2:1 (sometimes 3:1 depending on acuity)
    • PCU: 4:1
  • Floating: Required between ICU and PCU, with occasional floating to other departments as needed

Patient Population

  • Cardiac patients post CABG or PCI
  • Sepsis
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Respiratory failure

Required Certifications

  • ACLS
  • BLS

Experience Requirements

  • Critical Care experience required (years not explicitly stated, but critical care experience is mandatory)

Skills & Responsibilities

  • RNs are required to titrate drips
  • Common titratable drips include Levophed, amiodarone, heparin, precedex, propofol, cardene, nitro, neosynephrine, dopamine, etc.
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor roles present on each shift
  • No nurse aides in ICU; 1-2 nurse aides per shift in PCU
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7 in ICU
  • Use of respiratory equipment: ventilators, BiPAP, Airvo
  • Bedside monitors and monitor techs on site; RNs read strips

Scheduling

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (Days 7a-7p; Nights 7p-7a)
  • Expect to work 4 shifts per week
  • Weekend requirement: Usually every other weekend, depending on coverage
  • Holiday requirement: Depends on coverage
  • No call or standby requirement

Orientation & Dress Code

  • New employee orientation during first week
  • Orientation shifts on each ICU and PCU unit
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
