Job Details

• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Certifications Required:

  • ACLS
  • BLS
• Experience Requirements:

  • Must have strong EKG reading skills
  • Prefer experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT
  • Ability to wean and troubleshoot ventilators
  • Experience working across all ICU areas, including fresh open heart patients if applicable
• Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Unit Information

• Unit Types & Beds:

  • CVICU: 12 beds
  • COVID Unit: 8 beds
  • Medical-Surgical ICU: 8 beds
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 16-20 beds (with double occupancy rooms)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
  • PCU: 1:3 to 1:4
• Common Patient Diagnoses:

  • COVID-19 (manual proning)
  • Low-level neurological conditions
  • EVD (External Ventricular Drain)
  • DKA, Sepsis, Acute Renal Failure (ARF)
  • Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
  • Rhabdomyolysis, Post-MI, Detox
  • Chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters
  • Cardiac surgical patients including Impella, TAVR, VAD devices, STEMI, PCI, CEA, IABP
• Skills & Procedures:

  • Nurses must be able to interpret ABGs
  • Must titrate critical care drips including pressors (levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), antiarrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, argatroban
  • Familiarity with ventilator management and troubleshooting
  • Use of Glidescopes during intubation
  • Familiar with BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm

Staffing & Support

• Charge Nurse: May take patient assignments only as a last resort
• House Supervisor: Available 24/7 with some exceptions
• Nurse Aids: None on unit
• Physician Coverage: Intensivists in-house 24/7; NP supplementation available
• Respiratory Therapist: Covers all areas but not present in ICU 24/7
• Telemetry: No dedicated Tele/Monitor Techs; RNs read their own telemetry strips (Nihon Kohden monitors)

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Shift: 7am - 7pm
• Scheduling:

  • Schedules made 4 weeks in advance
  • Some self-scheduling allowed but finalized by manager
  • No block scheduling typically allowed
• Weekend Requirements: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (varies between day and night shifts on Fri-Sun or Sat-Tue)
• Holiday Requirements: 1 holiday and 1 holiday eve per winter season; not all holidays required
• Call/Standby: Possible low census call about once every 6 weeks; no scheduled call shifts
• Floating: Included in float rotation; may float to PCU, MST, or EC ICU/PCU as needed
• Dress Code: Any professional scrub color except camo; switching to navy scrubs in October

Orientation & Testing

• Orientation:

  • 8 hours general hospital orientation
  • 1 twelve-hour shift with preceptor on unit
  • 2nd twelve-hour shift with a buddy for questions
  • Additional orientation/checkoff for special skills (e.g., open heart surgery, CRRT)
• Testing:

  • Must pass dysrhythmia exam with minimum 80% within two attempts before contract signing
  • Failure results in 6-month disqualification for certain locations

This position offers a challenging and diverse ICU experience with a variety of critical care patients and advanced procedures, ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity care and ventilator management.
