Job Opportunity: RN - SICU/TICU Float (Travel Contract)
Location: Carmichael, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking experienced Surgical ICU nurses for a travel contract with float between Surgical ICU (SICU) and Trauma ICU (TICU) depending on census. Candidates will care for complex postoperative and trauma patients in a high-acuity ICU setting.
Unit Details
SICU (Surgical ICU)
- Beds: 10
- Patient Types: Postoperative recoveries primarily vascular (CEA, fem-pop, EVARs), laparotomies, thoracic surgeries, CRRT, ECMO, line placements
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- EMR: Cerner
- Charge Nurse Role: Yes (usually does not take patients, provides break relief)
- Nurse Aides: Yes (Safety Attendants/sitters)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holidays: Rotate with core staff
- Scrub Color: Navy (under shirts must be navy, white, or black; scrub jackets optional but must be navy)
- Telemetry: Yes, must interpret EKG strips
- Ventilator Patients: Yes
- Hospitalist/Intensivist: In-house coverage
- Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
- Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM; bedside report; OT and extra shifts available; self-scheduling with manager approval; schedules released 4 weeks in advance
- Floating: May float to other Sacramento facilities; mid-shift float rare
- Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific with preceptor
TICU (Trauma ICU)
- Beds: 8
- Patient Types: All trauma cases, CRRT, rapid infusers, line insertions
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 (1:1 for IABP and donor patients except IABP itself)
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, TNCC, NIHSS (trauma experience preferred)
- EMR: Cerner
- Charge Nurse Role: Yes (usually does not take patients, provides break relief)
- Nurse Aides: Yes (Safety Attendants/sitters)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holidays: Rotate with core staff
- Scrub Color: Navy (under shirts must be navy, white, or black; scrub jackets optional but must be navy)
- Telemetry: Yes, must interpret EKG strips
- Ventilator Patients: Yes
- Hospitalist/Intensivist: In-house coverage

- Pharmacy: ICU Pharmacy open during dayshift, 24/7 pharmacy coverage
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM; bedside report; OT and extra shifts available; self-scheduling with manager approval; schedules released 4 weeks in advance
- Floating: May float to other Sacramento facilities; travelers are first to float; mid-shift float rare
- Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific with preceptor
- Additional Notes: Interdisciplinary rounds daily; 12-hour night shifts every other weekend; first to float
Required Qualifications
- Discipline: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Specialty: SICU and TICU experience
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — preferred for TICU
- California RN License (active and current)
- Ability to read and interpret EKG strips
- Experience with ventilated patients and critical care equipment (CRRT, ECMO, IABP)
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required
Additional Information
- Candidates may not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable.
- Two supervisory references required: one within the past 12 months and one within the past 3 years.
- Charge nurse duties include break relief but generally do not involve patient assignments.
- Self-scheduling is used but finalized by management.
- Floating primarily within Sacramento area facilities; travelers are prioritized for floating.
- Scrub color and dress code strictly enforced.
Work Schedule
- 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday rotation with core staff
- Overtime and extra shifts available
