Location: Sacramento, California
Specialty: Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum & Obstetrics)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a high-risk Family Birthing Center unit. The unit includes Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Obstetrics care with couplet care responsibilities. Nurses must be comfortable managing all aspects of LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum), including circulating C-sections and "catching the baby" (NRP role).
Unit Details
- 10 Labor & Delivery beds
- 2 OR suites for C-sections
- 3 OB-ED triage beds and 3 antepartum testing beds (used for OB ED overflow)
- 12 Postpartum beds
- Approximately 100-150 births per month
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Couplets: 1:3-4
- Labor & Delivery: 1:1 to 1:2
- Antepartum: 1:1-3
- Charge Nurse/House Supervisor role available (generally does not take patients)
- OB surgical techs available on unit
- OB hospitalist available 24/7; Neonatologist on call 24/7 and rounds daily
- Anesthesia available in-house 24/7
- No respiratory therapy equipment (vents) on unit
- Nurses must read and interpret EKG strips in PACU
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: GE Corometric monitors with Fetalink surveillance
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM
- Report at bedside
- Overtime and extra shifts available
- Every other weekend (EOW) and holiday rotation with staff
- On-call response time: 30 minutes
- Floating primarily to other Sacramento facilities; mid-shift float is rare
- Scrubs provided
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
- Active California RN license
- Certifications required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) Advanced certification
- Experience with advanced fetal monitoring preferred
- Must be able to float to Mother-Baby unit and circulate C-sections
- Ability to titrate drips (e.g., Pitocin) required
- Must be able to perform all aspects of LDRP care independently
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
Additional Notes
- Candidates may not have been employed by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year, except PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
- Two supervisory references required at submission (one within 12 months, one within 3 years)
- High-risk unit with common diagnoses including preterm labor, bleeding, inductions, cesarean sections, and hypertension
- "Baby Catcher" role (NRP) is a full-shift assignment and may be filled by L&D or NICU staff depending on availability
