Registered Nurse - Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6N (48 beds total, including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), day and night shifts available
Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts per 4-week period, self-scheduled
Holiday Requirement: Work included in holiday rotation
Patient Ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
Charge Nurse: Yes, no patient assignment
Support Staff:
- Resource RN (day and night)
- Nurse Aides/PCTs (1-2 on days, 1 at night)
- Respiratory Therapist 24/7
- IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult sticks
- Pharmacy 24/7
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during days
Job Description
- Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurological diagnoses
- Manage 24-48 hour EEG monitoring and neuro assessments
- Utilize strong critical thinking and assessment skills to detect subtle patient changes
- MedSurg/Telemetry experience with strong skills preferred; training provided for cranial nerve assessments
- Floating to MedSurg/Telemetry floors possible
- Use of self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints)
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the unit
- SIMs Lab on Day 1 (pass/fail) for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions apply for some units)
- Teaching hospital environment; nursing students may be present
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, including experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients and trauma experience
- Emergency Department (ED) experience
- Neuro ICU experience
- ACLS and BLS certifications
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills
Additional Notes
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- No concurrent contracts allowed while working this assignment
- Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel submissions
- Strong emphasis on sterile technique and competency in Foley catheter insertion and central line care
- Typical diagnoses include epilepsy, brain tumors, neuro trauma, and scoliosis surgeries
- Telemetry experience required, with some ventilator management (BiPAP) by RT
- Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / Steel
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute RNs with strong critical thinking skills who are comfortable in a teaching hospital environment and meet the specified certification and experience requirements.
