Registered Nurse - Neuro Rehab Acute

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Rehab Acute unit in a large hospital setting (>500 beds). The unit specializes in neuro rehabilitation with a patient population primarily consisting of traumatic brain injury (TBI), brain tumor resection, cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and transplant patients (lung, liver). This is a teaching hospital with interdisciplinary team rounds and a focus on partnership of care involving patients and families.


Unit Details

  • Unit: Medical-Surgical Neuro Rehab
  • Unit Size: 52 beds
  • Patient Population: ~90% neuro patients, low stimulation environment
  • Common Diagnoses: TBI, brain tumor resection, CVA, lung transplant, liver transplant
  • Average Length of Stay: 19-21 days
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: RN 1:6, Tech 1:8
  • Shifts: 9-hour shifts
    • RN start times: 6:30 AM, 2:00 PM, 10:00 PM
    • Tech start times: 6:30 AM, 3:00 PM, 11:30 PM
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 8 weeks
  • Holidays: Worked as part of core rotation
  • Floating: Yes, to any MedSurg unit
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of floor-specific orientation
  • Charge Nurses: 2 with light assignments depending on census
  • Nurse Aides: Available
  • Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
  • Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage
  • IV Team: SWAT RN available for difficult IV sticks
  • Telemetry: No
  • Ventilator Patients: No
  • Hospitalists/Rehab Physicians: 3 rehab physicians rounding daily, on-call at night
  • Scrub Color: Slate grey

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
  • BLS Certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of core experience in Neuro Rehab or related specialty
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Strong MedSurg experience required; Rehab experience preferred
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • Must pass a Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes)
  • Must be comfortable maintaining sterile field and performing acute MedSurg care (IV therapy, wound care, etc.)
  • Must be comfortable with high level of communication and personal involvement with patients and families
  • Prior travel experience is required for Neuro ICU or ED (if applicable)
  • Must comply with facility appearance policies: no facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team

Additional Notes

  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with this employer
  • Must have been off permanent staff assignment with this employer for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
  • Large hospital experience (>500 beds) preferred
  • 50-mile radius rule applies for travel
  • Nurses may be expected to work with nursing students as this is a teaching hospital
  • Busy times typically 6-9 AM and 6:30-9 PM
  • Interdisciplinary team rounds occur 5 days per week, approximately 3 hours per day of therapy

This position is ideal for RNs with strong neuro rehab and MedSurg backgrounds who thrive in a teaching hospital environment and are comfortable with a high level of patient and family interaction.
