Registered Nurse - Medical/Surgical Intensive Care
Location: Prescott, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
Seeking travel RNs for a Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a hospital setting. The unit includes a 12-bed CVICU, 8-bed Medical/Surgical ICU, and a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with 16-20 beds. Nurses will care for critically ill patients with a variety of complex conditions including COVID-19, neurological issues, sepsis, cardiac surgery, and more.
Patient Population & Unit Details
- ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 to 1:4
- Common patient diagnoses: COVID-19 (including manual proning), low-level neuro, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sepsis, acute renal failure (ARF), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), rhabdomyolysis, post-myocardial infarction, detox, chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, Impella, TAVR, ventricular assist devices (VAD), STEMI, PCI, carotid endarterectomy (CEA), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
- Nurses should be able to interpret arterial blood gases (ABGs) and manage ventilators including weaning and troubleshooting
- Nurses will float between ICU, PCU, and other critical care areas as needed
Required Certifications & Skills
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing
- Strong EKG interpretation skills required
- Experience with titrating critical care drips such as pressors (e.g., levophed), paralytics, sedation (propofol), antiarrhythmics, dopamine, heparin, and argatroban
- Preferred experience with IABP and Prismaflex CRRT
- Ability to troubleshoot and assist with ventilators and use of Glidescopes during intubation
- Familiarity with BiPAP, CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), and Vapotherm devices
- Nurses are responsible for reading their own telemetry strips
Work Environment & Scheduling
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM
- Scheduling: Schedules made 4 weeks in advance with some self-scheduling allowed; block scheduling typically not permitted
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (weekend shifts may vary between day and night coverage)
- Holiday requirement: At least 1 holiday and the eve of another holiday per contract period; not all holidays require coverage
- Call requirement: Possible on-call once every 6 weeks during low census periods; no scheduled call otherwise
- Floating: Nurses will float to PCU, Medical Surgical Telemetry (MST), and Emergency Critical ICU/PCU as needed
- Dress code: Professional scrubs of any color except camouflage; transitioning to navy scrubs in October
Orientation & Support
- 8 hours of general hospital orientation
- 1 to 2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor or buddy system for support
- Additional orientation/checkoff for specialized skills such as open heart surgery or CRRT as needed
Additional Notes
- No nurse aides on the unit
- Intensivists available 24/7 with nurse practitioner support
- Respiratory therapists cover all areas but are not present in ICU 24/7
- Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort and assist with rapid response and code blue teams
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
- Minimum years of ICU experience: Not explicitly stated; preference for experienced ICU nurses with critical care skills
