Physical Therapist - Inpatient Rehabilitation
Location: Monterey, California
Contract Length: 28 weeks (approximately 7 months)
Shift: Day shift, 8-hour shifts (0830 to 1700)
Schedule: Thursday through Monday including holidays, every other weekend required
Unit: Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (13 private beds)
Patient Ratio: 1:4
Job Description
Seeking a Physical Therapist for an inpatient rehabilitation unit specializing in post-stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputations, general debility, new tracheostomy, post-COVID recovery, and other rehabilitation needs. The role involves hands-on patient care including transfers and activities of daily living (ADLs), with a focus on total patient care without the use of lifts. The therapist will work closely with PT, OT, SLP, and specialty rehab teams and participate in weekly interdisciplinary rounds.
Required Qualifications
- Licensed by the Physical Therapy Board of California
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification
- Minimum 1 year of experience in MedSurg or rehabilitation
- Comfortable with total patient care, patient transfers, and safe handling
- Experience with inpatient care, skilled nursing facility (SNF), and acute rehab/IRU preferred
- Familiarity with EPIC electronic health record system preferred
- COVID-19 vaccination required
- Must be nicotine-free (verified by drug screen)
Additional Information
- No nurse aides on unit; nurse-driven care model
- No call or standby required
- Floating possible to inpatient MedSurg with 1:5 ratio
- Orientation typically 2-3 days, dependent on prior rehab nursing experience
- Education and training of patients and families on adapting to new abilities is a key part of the role
- Regular weekend and holiday coverage required (rotating with permanent staff)
- Unit uses BiPAP, CPAP, occasional trach; no ventilators
- Dress code: Teal scrubs provided
Preferred Experience
- ICU experience preferred
- Previous travel experience preferred but not required
Notes
- The position requires comfort with rehabilitation nursing principles and safe patient handling without lifts.
- Participation in transfer training and competency testing with PT staff is required.
- The role includes teaching patients and families about living with and adapting to physical changes.
