Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse
Location: Augusta, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with critical care float experience to work primarily in the ICU with floating to Medical-Surgical (MS), MS Telemetry, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Neuro ICU, and Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) units. Patient population ranges from adults to geriatrics.
Required Experience
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in specialty (Critical Care)
- 1st time travelers accepted
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required
Work Setting & Responsibilities
- Floating primarily to ICU, but may float to MS, MS/Tele, PCU, ICU units
- Patient ratios:
- ICU: 1:2-3
- PCU: 1:4-5
- MS/MS Tele: 1:5-6
- Use of Epic electronic health record system required
- Other systems: Pyxis, SBAR
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
- Weekend shifts: Every other weekend (approx. 6 weekends in a 13-week contract)
- Call: None
- Holiday work: Required to work 1-2 major holidays if they fall during assignment
- Return to Orientation (RTO): Maximum 7 days per contract
- RTO blackout dates during Spring Break (April 4th-12th)
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Georgia
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Critical Care Float / ICU, with ICU experience within the last year
- Experience floating between units
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Certifications & Licenses Required
- NIH Stroke Certification (check if required for specialty/unit)
Additional Required Certifications (if applicable)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – if working in PACU, Pre-op, Endo, CSU, or ER with pediatric patients
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – if required by unit
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) – facility requires online course within a few months of hire if applicable
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Background check completed within 30 days prior to start
- Education verification of nursing degree required (can be pending at start with proof of processing)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months (with additional requirements if history of positive TB)
- Annual TB questionnaire required
- Immunizations or titers required for:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or signed declination
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (Tdap highly recommended)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Nov 1 - Mar 31)
Competency Exams Required
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (for Telemetry, MS/Tele, IMCU, ER, Cardiac step-down, ICU, PCU) – up to 3 attempts allowed
- Color blind testing
Additional Notes
- Floating between units is required
- Full compliance with all onboarding and credentialing requirements is mandatory to start on time; delays may result in a 2-week pushback due to orientation scheduling
- Candidates must review and sign facility-specific policies on code of conduct and professional appearance prior to start
- Two clinical references required
This position offers a dynamic critical care float role with exposure to multiple acute care units and a supportive orientation process.
