Description

Registered Nurse (Med Surg / Ortho)

Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (1830-0630)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: Rotate with permanent staff


Job Description

Seeking a traveling Med-Surg RN with orthopedic experience. The nurse will care for patients with general medical-surgical needs as well as orthopedic cases including total knee, hip, ankle, shoulder replacements, and spine surgeries (back and neck).


Unit Details

  • Unit Type: Med Surg / Ortho
  • Beds: 22 (average daily census of 6)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio 1:13
  • Tele/Monitor Techs: Yes, tele techs read and interpret strips
  • Charge Nurse: Yes, charge nurse takes assignment
  • Common Drips: Pain medications, antibiotics, blood (RNs not required to titrate drips)

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Unit-specific orientation: 1 day
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling with cyclic rotation
  • Block scheduling generally not approved unless weekends only
  • No duo scheduling or shared car arrangements allowed
  • If placed on call and called back, must arrive within 30 minutes

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Nebraska
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Orthopedics experience
  • BLS Certification

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Candidates must not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large health system (radius rule applies)
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
  • RN must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation or face contract termination
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days or less of contract start; no additional RTO approved
  • Floating may be required to MedSurg, rehab, or PCU with MedSurg acuity
  • Successful nurses are team-oriented, flexible, take ownership, and willing to learn
