Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Self-scheduling: Yes
Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, Medical-Surgical (Med Surg)
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (days), 1:5-6 (nights)
Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
Charge Nurse: Yes
Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
Patient Care & Specialty
- Patient diagnoses primarily include oncology and trauma patients.
- Common medications and drips include chemotherapy agents, heparin, cardizem, protonix, and occasional insulin titration.
- Nurses are expected to titrate drips such as insulin and cardizem.
- Specialty equipment includes ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000), ICP monitoring (training provided), Alaris IV pumps, and Lyko lifts.
- Float assignments within the same level of care (PCU and Med Surg units).
Orientation & Training
- Orientation period: 2 days
- Pass/fail open book exam on skills during orientation; 90% required to pass.
- Training provided for ventilator and hemodynamic monitoring equipment.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of oncology nursing experience within the last year
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience
- Trauma nursing experience
- Ventilator experience
- Hemodynamic monitoring experience including CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, and EV-1000
- Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) or Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) certification
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must have a valid driver’s license at time of submission.
- Candidates must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related local health systems.
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination.
- EPIC experience within the last 6 months is preferred but not mandatory.
- Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days or less from contract start.

- The unit cares for oncology patients from diagnosis through remission or end-of-life support.
