Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Self-scheduling: Yes
Unit Details
- Level of Care: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Medical-Surgical
- Number of Beds: 27-28
- Patient Population: Adults
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (Nights 1:5-6)
- Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
- Charge Nurse: Yes
- Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
- Float: Yes, to same level of care units (Med/Surg and PCU)
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Oncology (from diagnosis to remission or end-of-life care)
- Trauma
- Mixed Med/Surg patients
Required Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Oncology certification preferred but not required (Chemotherapy certification preferred)
- ONS/ONCC certification noted as required
- Competency in ventilator care and hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000, ICP) – training provided in real time
- Experience with EMR system: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience in PCU and Oncology or Med/Surg
- Charge nurse experience requires minimum 1 year
- First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Titration of drips including insulin (occasionally) and cardizem
- Common medications/drips: chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix
- Adherence to fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Pass/fail skills exam during orientation (90% required to pass)
Orientation & Training
- 2 days orientation
- Open book exam on skills learned during orientation

- Driver’s license required at submission to verify candidate location (radius rule applies)
- Hourly rounding is a focus for patient experience improvement
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nebraska
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Oncology experience
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- ACLS certification
- NIHSS certification
- ONS or ONCC certification
