Registered Nurse (ICU)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
Unit: Medical Surgical ICU
Beds: 34
Nurse:Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1-2
- PCU: 1:4-5
- Med Surg: 1:5-6
Job Description
- Provide nursing care for adult and pediatric patients over 15 years old in a fast-paced tertiary hospital ICU.
- Common patient diagnoses include neuro surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure (CRRT), general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, cancer surgeries, and more.
- Use and monitor advanced equipment such as CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring, Zoll Thermoguard, and Bell Mont rapid transfuser.
- RNs are required to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics.
- Read and interpret telemetry strips independently (Draeger heart monitoring system).
- Collaborate with charge nurses, attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers in a team environment.
- Floating required to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU.
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs.
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday based on unit needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nebraska
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Additional Information
- No candidates currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with certain affiliated health systems within a 50-mile radius are eligible.
- Rapid turnaround time required for submission (7 days or less for the 13-week contract).
- The unit is fast-paced with fluctuating patient volume. Success factors include critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, and willingness to ask questions and help others.
- Charge nurse attends rapid response teams (RRTs) and codes and takes assignments.
- Nurse aides/patient care techs are present with a ratio of 1:18.
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory devices.
