Description

Registered Nurse (Med Surg Ortho Trauma)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, day and night coverage available
Schedule:

  • Day Shift: 06:30 - 19:00
  • Night Shift: 18:30 - 07:00
  • Typically every other weekend required; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
  • 2-3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
  • Limited block scheduling available for travelers

Unit Details

  • Department: Medical-Surgical / Telemetry / Orthopedics (4th Floor North & South)
  • Number of Beds: 55
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:10-20
  • Telemetry Techs interpret monitors; RNs should have tele awareness but do not read strips themselves
  • Charge Nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
  • Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Joint replacements
  • Fractures and orthopedic trauma
  • Colon resections
  • COPD exacerbations
  • Prostatectomy
  • Cellulitis
  • Sepsis
  • GI bleeds
  • Pneumonia
  • Failure to thrive

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RN required to titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
  • Common drips include PCA pumps
  • Floating required to other medical-surgical areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
  • Focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness
  • Manage multiple discharges and admissions daily

Orientation & Training

  • Unit-specific orientation: 2 days
  • RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must pass with 90%)

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license for Nebraska
  • BLS (AHA) required
  • ACLS preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required at time of submission
  • Must comply with facility policies including no artificial nails in patient care areas

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must live within 50 miles radius and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at any affiliated facilities within the specified health system network
  • Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start
  • Successful nurses are team players, dependable, compassionate, and culturally sensitive (patient population includes Spanish, Karen, Burmese speakers)
