Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking experienced PCU RNs for a busy stepdown unit with 33 beds. The unit cares for patients ranging from young adults to geriatrics with complex medical issues including sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, and DKA.
Schedule & Shifts
- 36 hours guaranteed per week
- Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: As needed
- Scheduling: Unit schedulers assign traveler schedules (no self-scheduling)
Unit Details
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4-5
- CNAs available at approximately 1:10 ratio (fluctuates with census)
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignments
- Floating required to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units
- RN responsibilities include titrating drips (Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, Insulin) and reading/interpreting telemetry strips
- Tele/Monitor techs present, but RNs must interpret cardiac rhythms
- RT equipment includes BiPAP and Airvo
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: First week classroom training plus two 12-hour shifts on the floor
- RN skills exam during orientation: Open book, must score 90% to pass
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
- Current RN license in Nebraska
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission
- Must comply with facility policies including no artificial nails in patient care areas
Additional Notes
- High patient turnover with admissions and discharges often occurring within the same 6-hour shift
- Successful candidates demonstrate strong teamwork, positive attitude, engagement in patient experience, commitment to bedside report, and hourly rounding
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions will be approved
