Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Pediatric Stepdown nursing position requiring at least 1 year of Registered Nurse experience.
  • Weekend work required every other weekend.
  • Orientation sessions held bi-weekly.
  • First-time travel nurses and local candidates within 75 miles are welcome.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Pediatric PCU (Progressive Care Unit), with experience within the last year required.
  • Experience in Pediatric Cardiac Stepdown.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Work Schedule

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours per shift (total 36 hours/week).
  • Weekend shifts required every other weekend.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

Candidates must provide and maintain the following:

Background Checks & Verifications

  • Background check within 90 days of start, covering all counties lived, worked, or attended school in the past 7 years.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 90 days of start.
  • Education verification as applicable.
  • OFAC Sanctions List Search within 30 days of start.

Health and Immunization Documents

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start (latex allergy acceptable).
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or T-Spot) or chest x-ray within 12 months.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Required vaccinations or immunity documentation:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years, no exemptions)
    • Measles (2 vaccines or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Mumps (2 vaccines or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Rubella (1 vaccine or positive titer, no exemptions)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Polio vaccine or signed attestation
  • Seasonal flu vaccine required during flu season (no exemptions).
  • Drug test: Negative 10-panel (including THC) within 30 days of start (no instant tests).

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Must set up a Guest Account prior to clearance to access orientation and work systems.
  • Completion of competency checklists (CBOs) within 3 weeks after start date.
  • Completion of required online orientation modules prior to starting orientation.
  • Pass/fail testing on EKG/medication knowledge administered at orientation (passing score 80%).
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card training may be required depending on unit.

References and Employment History

  • Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months, with at least one supervisor reference.
  • Complete employment application including 7 years of work history.
  • Annual update of skills checklist.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments at this facility may have some document requirements waived or accepted on file.
  • Candidates must be cleared with all required documentation before starting; no pending background checks allowed.
  • Candidates should be prepared to complete labs and drug testing promptly after signing the contract.

This position offers a structured orientation and support system, suitable for both first-time travel nurses and local candidates, with a focus on pediatric stepdown care during night shifts.
